Brief Introduction

Founded in 1909, China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing (abbreviated as CUMTB) has just celebrated its 103rd anniversary. CUMT is one of the national key universities directly supervised by China Ministry of Education (MoE), consisting of two campuses----Beijing Campus and Xuzhou Campus.

Giving priority to engineering among other disciplines of science, liberal arts, management, law and economics, China University of Mining & Technology-Beijing is a state key university with mining and safety features. Being listed into the national “211 Project” and “985 Project” innovation platform of preponderant disciplines, it is also one of the first universities authorized to confer doctor and master degrees, one of the first universities for the Strategic Alliance of Industrial Technology Innovation and also a member of the Beijing Hi-Tech University Alliance.

Currently CUMTB consists of one graduate school and 11 academic schools. It also has 1 first grade national key discipline, 8 national key disciplines, 1 national key cultivating discipline, 9 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 16 first grade disciplines conferring Doctor Degrees and 35 first grade disciplines conferring Master Degrees, 69 second grade disciplines conferring Doctor Degrees, 173 second grade disciplines conferring Master Degrees, 9 professional degree authorization stations for master degrees, 60 specialties for undergraduates, 8 construction programs of key disciplines in the "211 Project" during the period of the Tenth Five-Year Plan, 8 disciplines offering positions for special appointed professors by the name of “Cheung Kong Scholar Program”, and 12 post doctoral research stations. In addition, the university is authorized to enroll MBA, EMBA and Engineering Master Candidates. CUMTB now has a total of 12124 students, including 5253 undergraduate students, 4899 graduate students and 1972 students receiving adult education.

CUMTB international exchange center was founded in 1995, and was authorized to enroll international students for language training and programs at the level of Bachelor, Master and Doctor as well as visiting program in March of 1996. Up to now, the international students of CUMTB are from more than 40 countries around the world, including Mongolia, Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Britain, America and etc.

Located in Xueyuan Road in Haidian District, with many famous universities around, CUMTB lies adjacent to the Olympic Forest Park. Equipped with good facilities for teaching and research, CUMTB provides a desirable environment for students.

Scholarship

Beijing Government Scholarship and CUMTB Excellent International Student Scholarship are available for international students.

Beijing Government Scholarship includes two types: full scholarship for excellent freshmen and half scholarship for excellent undergraduates. The assessment of Beijing Government Scholarship is made once per academic year. The International Students Office is responsible for the assessment based on the academic performance and achievement certificates provided by the applicants.

CUMTB Excellent International Student Scholarship falls into three types: first, second and third awards for excellent undergraduates. The International Students Office selects the prize winners based on their academic performance and attendance to class in the previous year.

Campus

There are housing facilities for international students at CUMTB. We provide international students with a double room that includes a bathroom, TV, telephone, air conditioner, wardrobe, desk, and network facilities. (No cooking is allowed in the room). The water and electric bills are paid by the students themselves. The university owns 20000 square meters of modern sports fields, with a football field that covers more than 15000 square meters, a basketball court, a tennis court, a badminton court, a volleyball court and a gymnasium with a wide array of facilities. The library, with 1600 seats set for reading and studying, covers an area of 10062 square meters. Possessing 0.88 million volumes of books, CUMTB has formed a digital resource sharing library collection system with mining and safety engineering as the focus. The library has also set up 17 Chinese full-text databases including CNKI, Wanfang Data and etc, and 10 English databases including Ei, Elsevier and etc. CUMTB has four canteens including a Muslims canteen and a main restaurant which offers multi-level, multi-flavor and various forms of food. The school clinic undertakes medical and health care for all students and staff in the university. CUMTB is located at the heartland of the Xueyuan Road, where there are many large shopping malls and shopping centers. Apart from these, the International Student Office carries out various extra-curricular activities every year, such as “Walking around Kunming Lake for International Friends”, sightseeing, watching Beijing opera or acrobatics, and so on.

Chinese Language Training Program

The program starts from approximately the beginning of March and September each year, and provides basic and practical Chinese courses. Three types of classes, including primary, intermediate, and advanced classes, are available for different levels of Chinese language learners.

Course outline：oral Chinese, listening comprehension，grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and a language practice course, etc. The university provides colorful extracurricular activities, including sightseeing, watching Beijing opera or acrobatics, and so on, per semester.

Registration is open all year round.

Senior Visiting Student and General Visiting Student

Senior Visiting Student (1-2 years): Applicants under the age of 50 who wants to make research on a specific area with either a master degree or qualification for PhD study.

General Visiting Student (1-2 years): Applicants must be above the age of 18, under the age of 50, and have completed at least two years of undergraduate study in their own universities.

Programs for Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. Degrees

At CUMTB every academic year is divided into spring and autumn semesters, with the latter marking the commencement of the academic year. The autumn semester starts in September and ends in January of the following year while the spring semester begins in March and ends in July. There is a winter vocation and a summer vacation every year. Usually, the summer vacation lasts 7 weeks and the winter vacation 5 weeks. Students should apply from March 1st to June 15th.

Undergraduate program: Students are required to complete the curriculum within 4-7 years and fulfill the regulated teaching program. Students who can obtain all the required credits and pass the oral thesis defense will receive a graduation certificate along with a bachelor’s degree.

Master’s degree program: Students are required to complete the curriculum within 2-3 years, fulfill the designated degree courses, complete the master’s thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with a Master’s degree.

Ph.D. degree program: Students are required to complete the curriculum within 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated degree courses, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Graduates will receive a graduation certificate with a doctoral degree.

Education Strength

CUMTB now has a total of 12124 students, including 5253 undergraduate students, 4899 graduate students and 1972 students receiving adult education. Of all undergraduate specialties in this university, 5 specialties are ranked top-1 nationally, including Mining Engineering, Mineral Processing Engineering, Geological Engineering, Safety Engineering and Fire Protection Engineering. The specialty of Safety Engineering in the University has also passed the Accreditation for Engineering Education by Ministry of Education. 6 specialties are authorized as National Characteristic Specialty and 5 as Beijing Characteristic Specialty. The university also won 9 National teaching Achievement Prize and Beijing Teaching Achievement Prize. 4 academic courses are authorized as Beijing Exquisite Course and 1 Textbook is authorized as Beijing Higher Education Exquisite Textbook. 4 teaching groups are awarded as Beijing Excellent Teaching Group and 2 teachers are awarded as National-level Excellent Teacher, while 4 teachers are entitled “Best-known Teacher in Beijing”.

Faculty and Staff

CUMTB now has a total of over 800 faculty and staff members. There are 10 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering among which 5 are working part-time at CUMTB, 145 supervisors for doctoral students and 144 supervisors for master students. Of the full time teachers 58% of them hold doctor degrees and 93% master degrees. The university boasts one winner of National Young Scientist’s Award, 9 special appointed professors by the name of “Cheung Kong Scholar Program”, 4 teachers entitled as National Outstanding Youth and Middle-aged Expert, 8 winners of National Distinguished Youth Foundation, 4 winners of China Youth Science and Technology Award, 7 teachers selected as National-level Outstanding Talents, 2 awarded as National-level Excellent Teacher and more than 100 teachers with various academic honorary titles at national, provincial and ministerial levels. With years of efforts, CUMTB has formed a faculty with noble ethics, excellent academic skills, high quality and rational structures and a staff with responsibilities for study as well as efficient management and service.

Cooperation and Exchange

International academic exchanges and scientific cooperation of CUMTB have become increasingly active. The university has established educational ties with dozens of foreign universities and academic organizations and has taken part in 6 Sino-foreign governmental scientific and technological cooperation projects approved by Ministry of Science and Technology. The university has actively explored ways to cultivate international talents and has established inter-university cooperation with such famous universities as Pennsylvania State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, TU-Freiberg. University of Mons in Belgium, Russia University of Mining and Technology in Moscow jointly cultivate students through sending excellent undergraduate students for academic exchange programs or postgraduate study in these universities. CUMTB has also joined the China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Scholarship Program, which is specially set for high-level universities of the county. Guided by the policy of “Go-out” and “Invite-in”, the university has built close cooperative relations with various coal enterprises and institutions of the country as a long-term mechanism of combination of production, study and research.

Application Requirement

1. For Chinese Learning students: senior high school graduates between the age of 16 to 50 in good health condition are required to submit International students' Application Form for CUMTB, Certificate of senior high school and original transcript together with copies and resume.

2. For visiting Students: university graduates between the age of 20 to 50 years old in good health condition are required to submit International students’ Application Form for CUMTB, Certificate of university education copies, resume, and recommendation letters from two professors in a related field.

3. For undergraduates: senior high school graduates at 16 and above in good health condition are required to submit International students' Application Form for CUMTB, Certificate of senior high school and original transcript together with its copies, Certificate of HSK-4, and its copy, original recommendation letters from two professors in a related field.

4. Master and Ph.D. Students: university graduates between the age of 20 to 40 years old and in good health condition are required to submit International students' Application Form for CUMTB, Applicant's highest academic diploma or certificate of university education with original transcript and copies, Certificate of HSK-6 (or above) with transcript and copies, original recommendation letters from two professors in a related field.

※Applicants are suggested to apply for Chinese language training program before entering undergraduate study if they cannot meet the HSK score requirement.
